NOTE: To manage the Nexus 5500 and Nexus 5600, two types of licenses are needed: the DCNM LAN and DCNM SAN. Each is a separate license.

More Notes:

Nexus switches have a grace period, which is the amount of time the features in a license package can continue functioning without a license.

Enabling a licensed feature that does not have a license key starts a counter on the grace period. You then have 120 days to install the appropriate license keys, disable the use of that feature, or disable the grace period feature.

If at the end of the 120-day grace period the device does not have a valid license key for the feature, the Cisco NX-OS software automatically disables the feature and removes the configuration from the device. There is also an evaluation license, which is a temporary license. Evaluation licenses are time bound (valid for a specified number of days) and are tied to a host ID (device serial number).

FAQ: Cisco ONE Software License Portability

September 29 2017 , Written by Cisco & Cisco Router, Network Switch Published on #Networking, #IT, #Technology, #Cisco License, #Cisco & Cisco Network

  • Cisco ONE Software License Portability is an important capability that allows you to reassign license entitlements from one hardware platform to another.
  • It is very valuable when refreshing your hardware by eliminating the requirement to repurchase software licenses for new hardware.

Cisco ONE Software License Portability for You

License portability is a key benefit of Cisco ONE Software through Cisco Software Support Service (SWSS). Previously, software application licenses were node-locked to a specific device. Now, when you need to move to a different device, license portability entitles you to move your software licenses to that new device. This allows you to continue using your existing investment in Cisco software and may eliminate the need to repurchase licenses when doing a hardware refresh. Depending on the feature sets you use, license portability can lead to significant savings.

FAQ: More about Cisco ONE Software License Portability

Q. How do I get license portability?

A. First, you must have purchased your licenses through the Cisco ONE Software licensing model. Licenses purchased outside of Cisco ONE Software are not eligible for license portability.

Second, you must have maintained an active Cisco Software Support Services (SWSS) contract from the initial date of purchase, or reinstate support through Cisco’s standard support reinstatement policy.

Q. I currently have Cisco Smart Net Total Care but not Cisco SWSS. Am I eligible for license portability?

A. Cisco Smart Net Total Care provides support for hardware and the platform/OS software. It offers many business critical services like advance hardware replacement. However, Cisco Smart Net Total Care does not provide software license portability for Cisco ONE Software.

To take advantage of license portability, you must have a current Cisco SWSS agreement in place. Cisco SWSS provides the benefits of license portability, software technical support, continuous innovation, updates, and upgrades as well as future software enhancements to Cisco ONE Software products. Cisco SWSS delivers software support in a single offering, making it simple for you to purchase, manage, and renew licenses.

Q. I had a Cisco SWSS contract in the past. Can I reinstate it?

A. If you want to reinstate your software maintenance agreement, then the standard Cisco Application Software Support Contract Reinstatement Policy applies. The reinstatement policy is included in the Software Transfer Relicensing Policy document on Cisco.com. Cisco ONE Software does not have a separate reinstatement policy.

Q. How do these policies apply if I have a subscription agreement? Do I need Cisco SWSS with a subscription contract?

A. Subscription contracts include the equivalent coverage of Cisco SWSS (technical support and upgrades rights) along with the term-based right-to-use license for Cisco ONE Software products and portability rights. These are available at a single price and give you the benefits for the duration of your subscription term. You do not require a separate Cisco SWSS contract.

Cisco SWSS is sold separately only in support of a perpetual license.

Subscription-based licensing will be offered in a future release of Cisco ONE Software. More details will be made available with the future release. [1]

License Portability Use Cases

Q. What are the main use cases for license portability?

A. There are four main use cases for license portability:

1. Hardware Replacement

2. Equipment Refresh-One-to-One Swap

3. Equipment Refresh-One-to-Many or Many-to-One

4. Moving from a Physical Device to a Virtual Machine, or the Reverse

We will discuss each of these scenarios in detail in the following questions.

Use Case 1: Hardware Replacement

Q. I had a hardware failure. The device was/was not under warranty. I do/do not have a Cisco Smart Net Total Care contract. What do I do?

A. Since hardware replacement is outside the scope of the Cisco ONE Software license portability policy, you need to follow existing procedures for hardware replacement. Replacements many be covered under a Warranty Replacementor through Cisco Smart Net Total Care. Or you may replace the hardware with a spare device that you have available.

You need to transfer the existing entitlements - including software licenses and any software maintenance agreements (Cisco SWSS) - to the new device. To transfer the software license, use the Cisco Software Licensing Portal (Cisco.com login required). Service contracts can be updated through the Cisco Service Contract Center (Cisco.com login required).

Use Case 2: Equipment Refresh-One-to-One Swap

Q. I need to perform a hardware refresh. Which policies are applicable to software portability when I perform a one-to-one swap of my older devices?

A. The hardware product family on which you have deployed your licenses determines your portability options. Licenses are portable only within a product family (for example, Cisco 2900 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR) to 2900 Series ISR). Devices with greater capabilities are categorized in a higher series because they gain more benefit from the capabilities in Cisco ONE Software.

There is no cost associated for porting Cisco ONE Software to a device within the same or lower series of a product family, such as Cisco 2901 ISR to 2911 ISR or Cisco 3901 ISR to 2911 ISR. There is a software upgrade fee for refreshing to a higher-series device, such as Cisco 2901 ISR to Cisco 3925 ISR, as you receive greater capabilities. Cisco will publish upgrade SKUs to enable this type of transfer.

For a classification of device families and series for Cisco ONE Software, click here.

The price for Cisco ONE Software will be consistent within a given product family for a given software product.

Table1 provides a consolidated view of the license portability options in a one-to-one equipment refresh scenario.

Table1. Equipment Refresh: One-to-One Swap Use Cases

Use Case

Policy

Cost

Refresh a device with a device in the same series

Example: Cisco 2901 ISR to 2911 ISR

If a Cisco SWSS contract is in place, the software can be used on the new device.

None

Refresh a device with a device in a higher series.

Example: Cisco 2901 ISR to 3925 ISR

You must pay a software upgrade fee to use the software from the original device on the replacement device.

You must purchase an upgraded Cisco SWSS contract for the new software. You will receive a credit for the old support contract.

The cost is the license cost on the new device minus the license cost on the old device, at current list prices, subject to customer-negotiated discounts.

You will also need to consider the cost of the upgraded Cisco SWSS contract.

Refresh a device with a device in a lower series.

Example: Cisco 3925 ISR to 2901 ISR

You are entitled to port the software deployed on your original device to a lower series device; your license entitlement would be set permanently to the lower series device family.

None. However, no reimbursements for the price difference between the higher/lower series is available The support contract remains with the original device family. You will have an option to renew your Cisco SWSS contract at a lower price based on software support for lower series device. Global credit & cancellation policy applies to SWSS contract for existing and new device.

Refresh a device with a next-generation device.

Example: Cisco 3925 ISR to 4000 Series ISR

In this case, the transfer depends on whether the next-generation Cisco 4000 Series ISR is considered to be the same series as the existing device or a higher or lower series. Depending on the series, the policies outlined above apply.

In all cases, you must migrate your software licenses to a next-generation device before your older device reaches end of support. At this stage, your Cisco SWSS contact will have expired and you will not meet the portability criteria.

The series of the next-generation device will determine the cost. Depending on the series, the policies outlined above apply.

Use Case 3: Equipment Refresh-One-to-Many or Many-to-One

Q. I have two 12-port switches that I want to combine into one 24-port switch. Or I have one 24-port switch that I want to break out into two 12-port switches. Does license portability apply in these cases?

A. Cisco ONE Software supports one-to-one license portability. Please refer to one-to-one device swap use case section for additional details.

Table2. Equipment Refresh: One-to-Many or Many-to-One Use Case

Use Case

Policy

Cost

I would like to combine two or more devices into a single device, or the reverse.

This is not allowed - only 1:1 license portability is permitted; Further details are provided in the one-to-one swap use case section.

Not applicable.

Use Case 4: Moving from a Physical Device to a Virtual Machine, or the Reverse

Q. I want to run some of my Cisco software on a virtual machine. Can I port my licenses over to a virtual machine?

A. Yes, you can, but there is an upgrade fee to use your software on a virtual machine (VM). This fee is required because the software contained within the base platform of the device, such as with the operating system, was not included in the original Cisco ONE Software product, but now would be within the VM offer.

The upgrade price is calculated as the license cost of the Cisco ONE Software product as a VM minus the license cost of the Cisco ONE Software product on the physical device. This fee is calculated at current list prices, subject to customer-negotiated discounts. Virtual device licensing will be offered in a future release of Cisco ONE Software. More details and upgrade SKUs will be made available at that time.

Q. Can I port my software licenses to a virtual machine in every use case?

A. No, you can’t. Not all software included in Cisco ONE Software is capable of running on virtual machines. When it can be run on a virtual machine, it is subject to the software license policies described above.

Q. I purchased Cisco ONE Software for a virtual machine, but have changed my mind and would like to run it on a physical device. Can I port my licenses from a virtual machine to a physical device?

A. Yes, but you must purchase the physical device with its base software platform, such as the operating system. You would then be entitled to use the Cisco ONE Software product(s) originally contained on the VM on your new device at no additional charge.

You also retain license portability rights associated with the original VM, so you could subsequently refresh the physical device back to a VM at no additional charge.

License Portability Operations

Q. How do I port the licenses to a new device?

A. Initially, licenses are deployed to physical devices in the same way as in today’s model. Cisco will provide you with activation keys and the correct software images for the new devices. Cisco is working on tools to improve the customer experience with easier deployment of the software products, license management, and capabilities.

Q. I am interested in porting one of the licenses in my product to a different device. Can I do that?

A. Your entitlement for portability is at the product level; for example, Foundation for Data Center Networking. These products cannot be unbundled into their components for portability to different devices. You can, however, deactivate all licenses from the original device and port them to a new device.

Q. Are all of the software capabilities included within Cisco ONE Software portable between different devices, virtual machines, generations of hardware, and so on?

A. The entitlement to the software capabilities is portable, but that doesn’t imply that all devices can run all the software within a Cisco ONE Software product. Cisco will maintain a table that shows what features can be enabled on each device. While you are entitled to the features within your purchased software, you need to verify that the device you intend to operate actually supports those features.

Q. How will I know whether my company is compliant with the software licensing policies?

A. You are responsible for verifying that you remain compliant with the licenses purchased. This typically matters only at times of hardware refresh. Cisco reserves the right to audit the customer environment through a third party to help ensure compliance.

Cisco is creating a software licensing portal that will assist you in tracking your software license entitlements and help you determine whether you are in compliance. These capabilities will be available in a future release.

Q. Is the software included in the base software platform, such as device operating system, controllers and APIs, included in these portability policies?

A. Because the cost of base platform software is included in a device purchase, it is not purchased as part of Cisco ONE Software. In general, base platform capabilities may differ between devices, similar to the hardware differences between devices.

What Benefits Can You Get from The Cisco ONE Software?

June 12 2016 , Written by Cisco & Cisco Router, Network Switch Published on #Cisco & Cisco Network, #Cisco License

Cisco ONE Software Includes Three Product Types: Foundation, Advanced Applications and Advanced Security

Cisco ONE Software Includes Three Product Types: Foundation, Advanced Applications and Advanced Security

How to make you software buying simple? You may hear about the Cisco ONE Software. Cisco introduced it at Cisco Live last year. And What is the exact Cisco ONE Software? How to make you software buying simple? You may hear about the Cisco ONE Software. Cisco introduced it at Cisco Live last year. And What is the exact Cisco ONE Software?

Cisco ONE Software helps customers purchase the right software capabilities to address their business needs. These products offer a greater value to customers with more features at “better together” pricing. They provide reduced complexity, simplified buying and the peace of mind that today’s software investments today will last into the future. Cisco ONE Software is organized by domains (Data Center, WAN, and Access) and feature sets (Foundation, Advanced Applications, and Advanced Security).

Cisco ONE for Data Center provides functionality for physical and virtualized data centers, across network and compute resources, and provides secure, scalable support for private and hybrid clouds.

Cisco ONE for WAN provides complete functionality for the branch and network edge.

Cisco ONE for Access offers a comprehensive feature set for wired and wireless access.

Finally, Cisco ONE Advanced Security provides a robust set of threat defense capabilities and central policy management. Rather than piece together the features needed, these products provide crossfunctional, use-case-based software sets to enable the performance, scale, and security needed in today’s IT environments.

Cisco ONE Software Includes Three Product Types: Foundation, Advanced Applications and Advanced Security

Cisco ONE Software provides customers with four key benefits:

1. Access to ongoing innovation and new technology from Cisco through Cisco Software Support Service (SWSS)

2. Investment protection of software purchases through software services-enabled license portability

3. Software suites that address typical customer use case scenarios at an attractive price

4. Flexible licensing models to smoothly distribute customer’s software spending over time

Addressing Your Business Challenges

Customers have told us that they want more value for their money, protection for their investments, access to the latest technology, and predictable technology spend. As budgets continue to shrink, IT needs to deliver more capabilities at a lower price point. Companies are tired of “throwing money away” every time they refresh their network, by having to repurchase the software necessary to operate their environment. At the same time, only a small portion of companies are able to adopt the latest technology, either due to budget limitations or the fear of investing in unproven technology. Finally, CFOs are demanding that IT becomes more predictable and consistent with technology spend.

Cisco ONE for Data Center

Cisco ONE for Data Center enables automated, policy-based cloud computing. Reduce cost and increase IT agility by securing private and hybrid cloud deployments for both physical and virtual environments.

The Data Center Foundation products provide functions such as automated application policy mapping, multi-tenancy support and business continuity, unified management, and infrastructure orchestration. These products support varied and demanding data center infrastructures. They are highly scalable, increasing flexibility and responsiveness to changing workloads and business conditions. And they provide extensive integration with automation and orchestration tools.

• The Data Center Advanced Applications products provide additional cloud visibility and control, storage network management, site to site encryption, and cloud infrastructure resource pooling with secure isolation. These products create an open and flexible solution that provides complete freedom in workload placement per business needs, while ensuring the same network security, quality of service (QoS), and access control policies in public cloud as in the data center.

Cisco ONE for WAN

Cisco ONE for WAN provides functions for the branch office and network edge. If you want to implement new branch-office initiatives and secure IP WAN connections, look no further.

• The Foundation for WAN product manages, secures, and optimizes your WAN to:

- Provide great user experiences with application and network performance monitoring

LICENSING on Cisco 2960/3560/3750 Series

August 31 2015 , Written by Cisco & Cisco Router, Network Switch Published on #Cisco License

In this article, we will talk about the licensing issue on the Cisco 2900/3500/3700, including the main Cisco catalyst switches---Cisco 2960-S, 3560X/3750-X. You will read these main contents in this article:

  • License
  • Temporary License
  • 2960/2960-S
  • 3560/3750, 3560-G/3750-G, 3560-V2/3750-V2
  • 3560-E / 3750-E
  • 3560-X / 3750-X
  • Installing Software Licenses Using CLI
  • Removing Software Licenses Using CLI
  • License Installation on Switch Stacks.
  • List of Commands

License

These are the 3 feature sets available on 3K platform of switches

  • LAN Base: Enterprise access Layer 2 switching features.
  • IP Base: Enterprise access Layer 3 switching features.
  • IP Services: Advanced Layer 3 switching (IPv4 and IPv6) features

(IP Services has all the feature sets that Advipservices had; advipservices is End Of Sale: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps7077/eol_c51_519629.html)

Cisco 3560-E and 3750-E Series support the IP Base and IP Services feature sets

Catalyst 3560-X and 3750-X Series support the LAN Base, IP Base, and IP Services feature sets.

The software licenses are not affected by Cisco IOS software upgrades. A software license applies only to a specific feature set. A switch can have more than one software license, but you can enable only one license at a time.

-Software Activation is a feature that is preinstalled on the switch, which allows you to install the software license for a feature set.

-This Software Activation License is unique to a specific device. In other words, licenses are locked to the switch's unique device identifier(UDI).

-A unique device identifier is made up of two components: the product ID (PID) and serial number (SN). Serial number is an 11-digit number that uniquely identifies a device. The product ID identifies the type of device. This information can be found using the "show license udi" command on the switch CLI. So when you request for a license on the switch, the first thing that you need to have is this "UDI" of the device

Switch# show license udi

Device# PID SN UDI

5 WS-C3750E-48PD-S CAT1033R1KF WS-C3750E-48PD-S:CAT1033R1KF

Temporary License

- A temporary software license is limited to a usage period (around 60 days). After the usage period expires, the switch continues to use the temporary software license until it is restarted. Before it restarts, warning messages state the switch is running the feature set without a valid license. After the switch restarts, the switch uses a valid software license based on the hierarchy (ipservices>ipbase>lanbase). If the switch does not have a valid license, it uses the IP base software license.

Here is the link that you could use to request for a temporary license:

https://tools.cisco.com/SWIFT/Licensing/PrivateRegistrationServlet?DemoKeys=Y

Note: On this link you should give the correct UDI of the switch (use "show license udi")

Cisco 2960/2960-S

Catalyst 2960 and 2960S switches run one of these images:

1. The LAN base software image: which provides enterprise-class intelligent services such as ACLs and QoS features. On a Catalyst 2960-S switch, stacking is also supported.

2. The LAN Lite image: This image provides reduced functionality.

Catalyst 2960S image ships with universal image that includes cryptographic functionality. The software image on the switch is either the LAN base or LAN Lite image, depending on the switch model.

How to determine which image your switch is running on 2960?

i. Switches running the LAN Lite image do not support the FlexStack module. They do not have a FlexStack module slot on the rear of the switch.(more on FlexStack: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps6406/white_paper_c11-578928.html)

ii. On the front of the switch, the label in the top right corner ends in –S if the switch model runs the LAN Lite image.

iii. Enter the show version privileged EXEC command. The line that shows the product ID also ends in either –L (if running the LAN base image) or –S (if running the LAN Lite image). For example, WS-C2960S-48PD-L is running LAN base; WS-C2960S-24TS-S is running LAN Lite image.

Cisco 3560/3750, 3560G/3750G, 3560V2/3750V2

Catalyst 3750 and 3560 switches run feature-specific software releases and do not support software activation. The Catalyst 3560 switch is supported by either the IP base image or the IP services image. Hence the show license command doesn't work.

3560G#show license
             ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

3560G#show license ?
% Unrecognized command

Cisco 3560E / 3750E

Catalyst 3750-E and 3560-E switches run the universal software image that has the Cisco IOS code for multiple feature sets (ipbase & ipservices). To enable a specific feature set, you must use the software activation feature to install the software license for that feature set. Catalyst 3750-E and 3560-E switches support either the noncryptographic or the cryptographic(k9 image) universal software image.

They support two software feature sets: IP Base and IP Services

Beginning with Cisco IOS Release 12.2(46)SE, the switches support these features:

- Temporary software licenses

- Rehosting a software license

- Cisco License Call Home

Note:

If the switch is running a software image earlier than Cisco IOS 12.2(46)SE, to run IP base feature - remove the IP services license from the switch, save the switch running configuration, and reload the switch. If the switch is running Cisco IOS Release 12.2(46)SE or later, enter thelicense boot level ipbase privileged EXEC command, save the switch running configuration, and reload the switch.

- If all the licenses are installed on the switch, the switch uses the highest license level, the IP services feature set.

Cisco 3560X / 3750X

Catalyst 3750-X/3560-X system is also loaded with a universal Cisco IOS Software image. Universal Cisco IOS Software images contain all Cisco IOS Software features. The level of Cisco IOS Software functionality available is determined by the combination of one (or more) licenses installed on the device. They support three software feature sets: LAN Base, IP Base, and IP Services.

Note:

For the Cisco Catalyst 3750-X/3560-X Series, in addition to universalk9 images, there are also images with the universalk9-npedesignation in the image name. The reason for this alternate image type is that some countries have import regulations that require that the device does not support any strong data-plane crypto functionality, such as IEEE 802.1AE, in any form. To satisfy the import requirements of those countries, this universal image does not support any strong payload encryption (that is, it is of the nonpayload encryption type).

Installing Software Licenses Using CLI

Step1: Log in to the switch by using the console port, the Ethernet management port, or a Telnet session.

Step2: copy license file onto the flash: device from the tftp server.

Step3: Install the license on the switch with the following command in the privilege mode:

license install file-sys:file-sys//lic-location

Once the license gets installed a log message similar to this should be seen: "%IOS_LICENSE_IMAGE_APPLICATION-6-LICENSE_LEVEL: Next reboot level = ipservices and License = ipservices"

Example:

Switch#license install flash:FDO1229V28R_20100704203238635.lic

     Installing licenses from "flash:FDO1229V28R_20100704203238635.lic"
Extension licenses are being installed in the device with
UDI "WS-C3560E-48PD-S:FDO1229V28R" for the following features:

5w2d:  %IOS_LICENSE_IMAGE_APPLICATION-6-LICENSE_LEVEL: Module name = c3560e  Next reboot level = ipservices and License =     ipservices

Step4: The license is installed once you have accepted the EULA, but to enable the feature set after installing the license, you need to reload the device. Before reloading the device, the next license boot level of the switch has to be changed, use the following command to do so:

(In config mode) - license boot level license-level [switch switch-num]

If the show license all command displays the license as "Active, Not in Use, EULA not accepted," you can use the license boot level command to enable the license and accept the end-user license agreement (EULA).

Step5: Verify if the new license was installed:

- show version | in License|license

Switch#show ver | in license|License
     License Level: ipservices
     License Type: Evaluation
     Next reload license Level: ipservices

- show license detail (it’s very important to check if the EULA is accepted or not from the command).

Switch#show license det

License State: Active, Not in Use
             License Priority: Medium
             License Count: Non-Counted
             Store Index: 0

The above mentioned commands are sufficient for troubleshooting purposes, however there are other commands as well that might help under different circumstances:

- show license feature

Switch#show license feature

advipservices                 yes               yes              yes            yes
ipservices                       yes               yes              yes            no
ipbase                              no                 no               yes            no

(use this command to check the allowed features on the switch, as you can see this command gives you some more detail about what you could do with these features on the switch & each feature's its status)

- show license udi .
Switch#show license udi
Device#   PID                             SN                             UDI

*0        WS-C3560E-48PD-S      FDO1229V28R     WS-C3560E-48PD-S:FDO1229V28R

(this command displays the Unique Device Identifier for each switch - which can be used during license generation. If you do not provide the correct UDI while requesting for a license (from TAC OR from the license portal), then you will not be able to install that license on the switch)

Removing Software Licenses Using CLI

In software releases earlier than Cisco IOS Release 12.2(46)SE, you have the license clear license-level [switch switch-num] privileged EXEC command. Use the license-level parameter to specify the software license to remove. Use the switch switch-num parameter to specify the stack member. The switch switch-num option is supported only on Catalyst 3750-E switches.

In Cisco IOS Release 12.2(46)SE or later, if the software license is in use (active):

  • •a. Enter the “license boot level license-level” global configuration command to specify a license level different from the current one.
  • •b. Restart the switch to enable new software license.
  • •c. Enter the license clear license-level [switch switch-num] privileged EXEC command to remove previous software license.
·         Switch#license clear ipservices

How to Activate Demo License on a Cisco 880 Router?

September 18 2014 , Written by Cisco & Cisco Router, Network Switch Published on #Cisco License

If you have a Cisco router 880 series with an advsecurity license but you find out your unable to use some protocols which you like to use. How to do that? In the following example that a Cisco 880 user shared here, and it told you how to activate Demo License on a Cisco 880 router?

I found out that the Cisco router 881w had an demo license of the advipsecurty license.

router#sh license feature

Feature name      Enforcement  Evaluation  Clear Allowed  Enabled

advipservices         yes         yes           yes         no

advsecurity           no          no            yes         yes

Which wasn’t actived. But your able to activate this license due the following command.

router#license boot module c880-data level ?

advipservices     advipservices level

advsecurity       advsecurity level

If you select the advipservices you will need to reboot the router. after the reboot the advipservices is activate now you have time to buy the correct license SL-880-AIS (upgrade option) [ Cisco 880 Advanced IP Services Image Feature License ]

You can download either also a demo license via the following linkhttp://www.cisco.com/web/go/license/index.html you need a CCO account to get the demo license.

If you have the correct license activated than you will see the following output

router#sh license feature

Feature name      Enforcement  Evaluation  Clear Allowed  Enabled

advipservices         yes         yes          yes          yes

advsecurity           no          no           yes          no

Now you have to restart the router and your new license should be activated.

Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnect Port Licensing

August 7 2014 , Written by Cisco & Cisco Router, Network Switch Published on #Cisco License

When you are designing a Cisco UCS Unified Computing environment you will use several components which will work together. One key object in the whole chain is the Fabric Interconnect which connects the chassis, used storage and uplinks to Datacenter Switches like the Nexus 5000 series. Especially when designing a FlexPod Certified Design.

CiscoFIStack.png

All chassis, blades and rack servers that are attached to the Fabric Interconnects are part of a single, highly available management domain. By supporting Unified Fabric, the Cisco UCS 6200 Series provides the flexibility to support LAN and SAN connectivity for all blades within its domain.

Typically deployed in redundant pairs, the Cisco UCS 6200 Series provides uniform access to both networks and storage. Which is great when building in our case a fully virtualized VMware environment.

Currently there are two types of Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnect switches, namely:
Cisco UCS 6248UP 48-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet, FCoE and native Fibre Channel switch offering up to 960-Gbps throughput and up to 48 ports.
Cisco UCS 6296UP 96-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet, FCoE and native Fibre Channel switch offering up to 1920-Gbps throughput and up to 96 ports.

FImodels6200.png

The ports on a Fabric Interconnect needs to be licensed to be used. Any of the 32 fixed ports or expansion module ports can be used for 1G/10G Ethernet, FCoE or FC. To use a port you must have the correct SFP and configure the port as you like to use it via the Unified Ports tool.

  • On the 6248UP there are 12 ports pre-licensed and up to 20 additional ports can be licensed using an UCS-LIC-10GE license per port.
  • On the 6296UP there are 18 ports pre-licensed and up to 30 additional ports can be licensed using an UCS-LIC-10GE license per port.
  • The former Cisco Fabric Interconnect models UCS 6120XP has 8 ports pre-installed licenses and the UCS 6140XP has 16 pre-installed licenses.

More Tips: Some Users’ Real Problem like this: UCS 6248UP Licensing

How will the 6248UP Fabric Interconnect ports be licensed? Will ports configured as Fiber Channel also consume a port license? Will the Expansion Module be fully licensed or will it share license with fixed ports?

The UCS 6248UP (with NO expansion module) has 32 physical ports. Of these–12 ports are pre-licensed; Up to 20 additional ports can be licensed using UCS-LIC-10GE per port

The UCS-FI-E16UP (16 port Unified Expansion Module) has 16 physical ports. Of these–

  • 8 ports are pre-licensed
  • Up to 8 additional ports can be licensed using UCS-LIC-10GE per port

Can the UCS-FI-E16UP ports be used for chassis connections or are they for uplinks only (like the 6120/6140 GEM modules were)? Is a port license required for every use of a physical port? E.g.

  • 10GE chassis connection
  • 1/10GE uplink
  • 1/2/4/8 Gbps FibreChannel uplink
  • 10GE FCoE direct attach
  • 1/10GE appliance port
  • 1/10GE SPAN/monitor port

All physical port need to be licesned on the fabric interconnect. The 6200 license structure is listed above. The 6100s the fixed ports needed license however the expansion cards do not.

…More discussion you can see https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11249966/ucs-6248up-licensing

Expansion Module
The UCS-FI-E16UP (16 port Unified Expansion Module) has 16 physical ports. Of these 8 ports are pre-licensed and up to 8 additional ports can be licensed using UCS-LIC-10GE per port?
CiscoUCS-FI-E16UPExpansionModule.png

The eight default licenses that come with a 6200 series fabric interconnect expansion module can be used to enable ports on the base module, but will travel with the expansion module if it is removed. In the 6248Up there is room for 1 expansion module and in the 6296UP you can fit 3 expansion modules.

Important: All ports need to have licenses regardless if it is server/Ethernet/fiber channel ports!! You can manage licenses through UCS Manager.

Typical Questions from Users While Dealing with Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnect Port Licensing

Q: Can I export port licenses from the 6100 series to the 6200 series?

A: Licenses are not portable across product generations. Licenses purchased for 6100 series fabric interconnects cannot be used to enable ports on 6200 series fabric interconnects or vice-versa.

Q: Licenses brought to the Fabric Interconnect through an expansion module; do they keep the licenses when the expansion module is removed?

A: Upon removal of an expansion module, any default expansion module licenses being used by the base module are removed from the ports on the base module, resulting in unlicensed ports.

Q: If I use a license for a port and I disable the port later on is that license locked?

A: Port licenses are not bound to physical ports. When you disable a licensed port, that license is then retained for use with the next enabled port. If you want to use additional fixed ports, you must purchase and install licenses for those ports.

Q: If I need a new port quickly but I haven’t received the license file yet, what can I do?

A: If you attempt to use a port that does not have an installed license, Cisco UCS initiates a 120 day grace period. The grace period is measured from the first use of the port without a license and is paused when a valid license file is installed. The amount of time used in the grace period is retained by the system.

Q: When I use a port in Grace Period do I use it for all ports?

A: No, each physical port has its own grace period. Initiating the grace period on a single port does not initiate the grace period for all ports.

  • 1 The total number of VPN sessions depends on your licenses. If you enable AnyConnect Essentials, then the total is the model maximum of 25. If you enable AnyConnect Premium, then the total is the AnyConnect Premium value plus the Other VPN value, not to exceed 25 sessions.
  • 2 In routed mode, hosts on the inside (Business and Home VLANs) count toward the limit when they communicate with the outside (Internet VLAN), including when the inside initiates a connection to the outside as well as when the outside initiates a connection to the inside. Note that even when the outside initiates a connection to the inside, outside hosts are not counted toward the limit; only the inside hosts count. Hosts that initiate traffic between Business and Home are also not counted toward the limit. The interface associated with the default route is considered to be the outside Internet interface. If there is no default route, hosts on all interfaces are counted toward the limit. In transparent mode, the interface with the lowest number of hosts is counted toward the host limit. Use the show local-host command to view host limits.
  • 3 For a 10-user license, the max. DHCP clients is 32. For 50 users, the max. is 128. For unlimited users, the max. is 250, which is the max. for other models.
